What is a Birth Doula?

Doula is a Greek word meaning a woman who serves. In maternity care, a Birth Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical and emotional support to a mother and her partner during labor and delivery. Doulas provide evidence-based information and resources, and encourage informed decision making. A Birth Doula supports a mother and her partner so that they can advocate for the birth experience that they desire.
