Doula is a Greek word meaning a woman who serves. In maternity care, a birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical and emotional support to a mother and her partner during labor and delivery. Doulas provide evidence-based information and resources, and encourage informed decision making.

Doula support in maternity care results:

  • 30% reduction in cesarean birth

  • Reduced need for artificial induction

  • Reduced need for pain medication

  • Increased positive birth experiences
